Before You Answer the Payment Question, Ask a Better One
Cox Automotive’s affordability analysis points to a practical sales habit: understand the customer’s tradeoffs before presenting another vehicle.

The Source Is About Changing Choices
In his October 12 analysis, Cox Automotive chief economist Jeremy Robb describes customers changing what they buy as household costs press on their budgets. Some consider different vehicles; others buy older used models or keep what they already have. His point is that demand is shifting. That makes the first sales conversation worth a closer look.
For a sales team, the practical lesson is straightforward: a customer who questions affordability may still want a vehicle. Before presenting a different option, find out which part of the decision is making them hesitate.
Keep the Conversation in Order
Ask what the vehicle needs to do, what matters about the current one and which tradeoffs the customer is willing to consider. Then ask permission to discuss the budget range and timing. A useful question is, “Which part of this option would you like us to work through first?” Listen for the answer instead of treating every concern as a request for a lower monthly payment.
Repeat the priorities back in plain language. If the customer wants to compare options, prepare a written quote with the vehicle, price, relevant charges and assumptions clear enough to review. Keep optional products identifiable. Any financing discussion should use accurate, reviewed terms; an estimate should be labeled as one. A payment figure alone cannot explain the whole purchase.
Finish with one agreed next step. That might be a comparison, a visit or time to think. A focused conversation builds trust when the customer understands the choices and can say no. Confidence does not require pushing someone past a concern your team hasn’t answered.
Put the Habit Into the Process
Good Carma can help a dealership turn that conversation into written steps: who answers the inquiry, which discovery details belong in the customer record, who reviews the quote and what the finance team receives. AI can help organize notes or draft a comparison from approved information. A person still checks the facts and owns the commitment.
For the next week, review a small sample of inquiries. Did the record capture the customer’s priorities? Did the quote address them? Was a next step agreed, and did your team complete it? Track those habits alongside appointments kept and sales outcomes. If conversations stall at the same question, improve the answer and the handoff before adding more messages.
